Do-It Your Self Tactical Sling

Needed a rifle sling and wanted to get all crafty today, so I took an outing to REI to buy the materials to put together the sling detailed here. REI had everything needed--buckles, nylon web, etc. Spent about half an hour putting it together, and in the end got pretty good results.

Will post pictures later, but it's essentially the same sling (in black) as shown on the link, minus the "lengthening" assembly. It wasn't sturdy enough for my likings, and is only needed to give you a couple extra inches of sling to use if you need to switch to your weak shoulder. Not especially needed for me, and I didn't want to mess around with getting the assembly complete to my liking.

Overall, a fun project and a solid end product. The materials cost all of about $11, give it a try!

Random Tidbits

  • Glock seems to be increasing prices on factory magazines--40% from what I've read. Get 'em cheap while you can: OMB Express has G17 mags for $17.99, showing "In Stock" at the moment.
  • A sling is essential to have for real-world use of a rifle, but sometimes skipped over if you do most of your shooting at a range. Make sure you've got one for each SHTF rifle, and likewise, a good holster for your handguns!
  • Bowling pins make good--and surprisingly sturdy--targets. A local gunshop sells used pins for a couple bucks a pop--mine have survived 4-5 trips to the range, being pelted with everything from .22LR (which mostly bounce off) to 5.56mm (XM193 loads--which do some damage to the pins, but nothing critical).
  • Federal's New-ish HST hollow point load ends up with some mighty nasty looking expansion--as seen here and here. Beautiful. They're also priced competitively--if you can find them. AmmunitionToGo looks to have some in stock--$20 for a box of 50 in 9mm. I'll have to get me some of these soon...
  • Wal-Mart is apparently bumping up the price on their 9mm Winchester White Box 100 round packs--generally the lowest price around. New price is 19.99--my Wal-Mart hasn't bumped the price yet, but I've read that the new price has taken effect in lots of areas. If it hasn't hit your area yet, now could be a good time to stock up.

Loyal readers!

Wow--shocked to see 5 comments on the "status" post below. I didn't know that there were still people out there checking TEOTWAWKI Blog--figured the web traffic was random Google-people stumbling upon my ramblings. :) Good to know you're out there.

So, as per usual, real life is keeping me busy. That doesn't mean that prepping and enjoying apocalyptic entertainment have taken a back seat. Just haven't taken the time to update the blog--partially because I figured no one would miss it. At least there are a few of you out there, so I'll try better to post away.

What I'm most excited about: Terminator 4. Terminator 2 tops my favorite movies list, and this trailer has me pumped to see the next movie in the murderous android franchise. Christian Bale is a solid choice for John Connor. I'm not too sure about director McG who I know only from the Charlie's Angels moves (bleck)--but what I've read and seen so far has my hopes up. For example, from EW.com:

''Our idea is to give the film the look of Children of Men but with the velocity of Transformers,'' says McG (Charlie's Angels). ''We aspire to do to Terminator what Christopher Nolan did with the Batman franchise.''

Hoping this will rock!

Status of the TEOTWAWKI Blog

Aiight--so I've been slacking on the blogness. No posts, 5 months. Inexcusable, I know. Well, the unfortunate-ness of real life has kept me from spending time on the blog. Never fear--it's not entirely abandoned. I'll be getting back on the updating routine eventually.

Oh ya, and they're remaking Red Dawn! WOLVERINES! Read the story.
