Since finances have hit a snag, I'm sifting through the attic, basement and garage for hidden treasures that can be cleaned up, organized and properly stored. It's amazing how many tools, tarps, rope and other items one can find in their own home (at least in my disorganized house). Not everything needs to be new, but what you have should be organized, cataloged and made accessible.
Sometimes it becomes to easy to wander into the world of imagination when prepping for that SHTF scenario. I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to getting caught up in it to a debilitating degree. I have to remind my self all to often that the key to prepping is a balance act between several lives. The balance act between living the social norm lifestyle and at the same time prepping for the worst case scenario. So, that being said I pushed myself this week to open an IRA account with the hopes of adding another form of retirement to my future. It doesn't hurt to dream the good dream every now and then. I recommend this to someone who hasn't done it yet, but, get the kind of account that will allow you to withdraw your money without penalties at any time. They do exist....
Bought a few extras at the grocery store, freeze-dried coffee, can beans (takes less fuel to cook than dry beans), rice in the hard plastic container, bacon bits. clorox....organized gear and took out canned goods (3 cans) nearing or out of date (will eat those in a few days), re-did the small 'truck' pack, added a very light and compact hammock and water pills (whole pack = 4.5 pounds, very basic, this is an 'urban' bag, relies on found items such as plastic sheets, cardboard and water/soft drink bottles, cans for stove, etc.), reloaded 150 rounds .38 sp. and put up. Ordered a small CRKT knife found on ebay, $10. Shpped for a shotgun, found a good used Wingmaster in 20 ga., $150 - pondering purchase. Noteworthy that while I was doing all that the "Occupy" demonstration was going on downtown... interesting times!
I got a lot done this week. First I found a 50 gallon barrel for $17.....the only drawback is that it had apple concentrate in it so it smells like apple wine so I am rinsing it each day and am gonna try to use baking soda to help remove the smell. Second,I traded my microwave for some cast iron cookware..2 bread pans and a 12" skillet...all in very good condition. Tomorrow I am getting a Lodge cast iron dutch oven with a handle for $35 (talked them down from $55). Third, I bought 24 large and 24 small Kerr and Ball jars for canning. I got them for 29 cents each at Goodwill. I had to pay full price for the lids and rings but it is worth it for me. I am new to canning and want to practice before I buy the Tattler lids. I re-packed my B.O.B.'s for cold weather and added a case of water and a fleece blanket to the trunk of the car. I got 2 Rubbermaid storage boxes at Value Village for $4 each and will be using them for prep storage. I bought $20.00 worth of nickles and got a total of $1 pre-1965 silver from it. The rest I stacked away and am contemplating trading the post-1964 nickles I have aquired ($150) for some silver at the pawn shop. I know I won't get much, but what I do get will be worth it after TSHTF. I am still unemployed (just working temporary day jobs as they come along)and I feel like the money I am spending is worth the value of the preps that I am making(I am careful not to dip into my money for bills).
Doing odd jobs for cash on the side. Purchased some "web" gear in case we have to walk out of our bug in location. Looking into a good 12 gauge for purchase, and of course getting some extra food and water for long term storage. I did purchase a water filter kit that will allow me to filter about 14 gallons of water per day from my pond and underground springs. Thinking of getting a second set of filters for it. Just in case for long term issues....
